Middle School Youth in Government

Connelly youth advisory

Dundee Village issued the following announcement on Nov 16.

Mason Middle School was one of 10 schools represented at the Middle School Youth in Government late conference. Ms. Blackburn, Mr. Riley, Mrs. Durocher, and Mrs. Stubleski took 37 students to spend three days in Lansing, participating in an immersive mock legislature.

There they had the opportunity to debate on the house and senate floors in the Michigan State Capital building. Two of our students, Zayla Brown and Aubrey Iocoangeli, were honored as best delegates from their respective houses. Four clerks, Clara Tibai, Alyssa Abar, Bella Parent, and Alex Bushroe, helped to keep the sessions running smoothly. Out of 117 bills written to debate at the conference, 29 bills were signed by the youth governor into law. Twelve of our bills (out of the 19 that we wrote) landed on the governor’s desk. Ten of our bills were signed and two bills were vetoed. In a joint session, Anderson Moore and Bowie Jacobs were able to convince the house and senate to override the governor’s veto of their bill, giving Mason a total of 11 bills signed into law. Students also participated as inspirational speakers, displayed their talents in the talent show, and Zayla Brown even ran as a Lieutenant Governor candidate. Everyone did a fantastic job and made Mason proud!
