In honor of National Police Week, the Monroe Police Department would like to remember those Monroe Police Officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
Officer Oscar Reinhardt was shot and killed on August 19th, 1923 while in a vehicle pursuit of seven robbery suspects who had just robbed patrons at the Allendale Inn. The suspects shot and wounded two men and one woman and escaped with thousands of dollars in cash and jewelry. All seven suspects were later apprehended after a several day manhunt.
Captain Solomon Fling died on August 2nd, 1925 when he was involved in a motor vehicle crash while searching for robbery suspects in the area of South Dixie Hwy. and Dunbar Rd. Captain Solomon’s vehicle left the roadway and overturned several times ejecting Captain Solomon and Officer Lockwood. Good Samaritans transported Captain Solomon to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Officer Robert Hutchinson died on June 28th, 1978 in a drowning after falling in the River Raisin at the Monroe Street Dam. Officer Hutchinson responded to a report of a child who had fallen into the river. Officer Hutchinson had put on his life jacket and proceeded out onto the dam where he lost his footing and fell in the river and was swept away. His body was later recovered at the Macomb Street Dam. Rescuers were able to restart his heart but he died seven hours later at a local hospital.
