State Representative James DeSana has proposed a constitutional amendment to transition Michigan's Legislature from full-time to part-time. The proposal, introduced as House Joint Resolution D on February 12, aims to enhance government efficiency and accountability.

"Creating a part-time legislature is a significant step toward building a more efficient and effective state government," said DeSana. He believes this change would focus legislators on pressing issues and align Michigan with other states that have successfully implemented similar transitions.

DeSana further stated, "By adopting a part-time legislature, we can reduce unnecessary bureaucracy and encourage our elected state officials to be more engaged with their communities. The people deserve a government that is focused on effective results."

The resolution proposes amending Section 13 of Article IV of the state constitution, limiting legislative sessions to no more than 90 consecutive days starting in 2027. House Joint Resolution D has been referred to the House Committee on Government Operations. If approved by both chambers, the resolution will be presented to voters in the next general election.
