Monroe Public Schools recently issued the following announcement.
MHS PRESENTS ALICE IN WONDERLAND NOVEMBER 19-21
The Monroe High School Drama Club invites audiences to follow them down the rabbit hole for the fall production of Alice in Wonderland, November 19-21. Based on the Lewis Carroll classic, the play shares the adventures of young Alice in a delightful and wacky world of questions, conundrums, and curious characters.
Junior Gabby Forrester portrays Alice. Gabby has been part of theatre since middle school – appearing in Lion King, Annie, and Cinderella – but this is her first major role. She expressed thanks to her fellow cast members for helping her grow into the character. “My favorite things about the show are having the opportunity to act with different people, getting to know the cast, and becoming good friends with everyone,” Forrester said. “I’ve enjoyed every second!”
The ever-smiling Cheshire Cat, who becomes Alice’s guide, is played by senior Kylie Jacobs. “Alice in Wonderland has always been one of my favorites,” Jacobs shared. “I love being able to put myself into this new world that is created on the stage, taking on and creating this new personality.”
During her adventure, Alice meets a host of interesting characters including the White Rabbit (Samantha Eby), Caterpillar (Virgil Braun), Frog Footman (Cannon Fisher), Duchess (Alanna Colpaert), Cook (Serra Forrester), the Queen and King of Hearts (Cailin Molenda and Alexander Schmitt), Knave (Stephen Ortiz), Courtier (Megan Hensley), Lady (Danie White), Mad Hatter (Alexia Barton), March Hare (Rayyan Peracha), Dormouse (Abigail Whitman), Tweedledee and Tweedledum (Tim Kosciolek and Zane Stoner), Humpty Dumpty (Nolan Livingston), Mock Turtle (Claire DeLoach), Gryphon (Jolie Boudrie), and Executioner (Cannon Fisher).
The cast also includes soldiers (Brandon Miller, Bailey Martinez, Serra Forrester), playing cards (Brandon Miller - 2 Spades, Bailey Martinez - 5 Spades, Sydney Fell - 7 Spades), and flowers (Ash Martinez – Pink, Danie White - Rose, Sydney Fell - White, Bailey Martinez - Yellow, Mia Lini - Violet, Hazel Self - Blue).
The fall play is under the direction of Jeremy Kimberlin, who is supported by Costume Designer Rebecca Molenda; both are faculty in the Language Arts Department. Kimberlin is making his directorial debut but has worked behind the scenes of several MHS productions building sets and overseeing stage crew. Molenda, who has choreographed multiple shows and is set to direct the spring musical, made almost every costume from scratch.
Kimberlin expressed appreciation for her talent and their collaboration. “Rebecca used her artistic vision and craftsmanship to create the costumes and bring these characters to life,” he said.
Production assistance is provided by Drake Carr, Student Stage Manager and Lead Painter; Samantha Drougel, Sound; and Kate Stephenson, Prop Manager. To add to the fun of the fantasy world, the Stage Crew (Olivia Beeler, Rose Fischer, Kendall Ruman, Kate Stephenson, Liz Willard) will be dressed as playing cards.
Evening performances on Friday and Saturday begin at 7 p.m. in the Monroe High School Auditorium, with doors opening at 6. The Sunday matinee is at 2 p.m. All tickets will be sold at the door – $5 for students, $10 for adults, $8 for seniors.
