Ellie Sieler’s streak could not be stopped.
The last six teams that tried during her freshmen year could not do it. “If your team gets her out once you should feel pretty good,” said Whiteford coach Matt VanBrandt. “Playing Ellie provided a great learning experience for our young players. She’s the best in the county, maybe the state.” She is headed to the best softball program in the state. She committed to national power University of Michigan in December of 2019. Sieler is looking forward to that next challenge. She reports to Ann Arbor on Aug. 25. “It’s really amazing,” she said. “It doesn’t feel real yet. Obviously this is something I have been dreaming about since I was a little kid. It really hasn’t hit me yet. … They definitely are a very good softball school. I’ve always wanted to take this game as far as I could.” The significance of her 79-game hitting streak is just starting to set in for Sieler. “At the beginning of the season, I thought about it too much,” said the daughter of William and Jill Sieler of Monroe. “I let it get to me. I was not playing my game. Toward the end, I got more relaxed. I had the mindset, whatever happens, happens.” She appreciates the streak more now that it is over. “When I look back, it is definitely a pretty neat accomplishment," she said. “A lot of people helped me out along the way.” Despite playing just three seasons of high school softball, she set career records for batting average (.600), hits (246), singles (182), runs (213) and stolen bases (64). Coach Jim Davis is certain her 193 putouts for an outfielder also is a record, but he has not been able to verify it. He also is trying to figure out if her 37 doubles and 19 triples are school records. This year, she set school season records for batting average (.664), hits (91), doubles (21), runs (76) and stolen bases (32). She was not thrown out on a stolen base attempt this season and struck out just once on a called third strike. She fanned just 7 times in 448 career plate appearances. Her game developed through the years. “My freshman year, I was pretty much just a bunter and slapper,” she said. “Other aspects have grown. Power is one of them. I really committed to lifting in the weight room.” Even with a Division 1 scholarship waiting for her, Sieler didn’t narrow herself to one sport. She also was an All-Region basketball player during her senior year. “I like basketball,” she said. “It’s not my No. 1, but basketball is just a really fun, competitive, fast-paced game.”
Here are the other Trojan All-Region choices and their credentials:
