On July 9, Michigan Rep. Joseph Bellino (R-Monroe) announced via Facebook that his bill, HB 4217, had been signed into law by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
“Yesterday, the governor signed my bill, HB 4217, into law,” said Bellino in his Facebook post. “HB 4217 modernizes the process of how prescriptions are transmitted. This fights fraudulent prescriptions.”
According to a press release on Michigan House Republicans website, Bellino has sponsored other opioid-reform policies in the past. These policies include a locking vial to prevent drug abuse and a requirement for doctors to inform parents of minors about the dangers of opioids prior to prescribing, as well as measures requiring doctors to consult the Michigan Automated Prescription System (MAPS) to verify a patient has not shown any signs of being an abuser before prescribing opioids.
