Sen. Dale Zorn (R-Ida) released a statement of sorrow earlier this month on MiSenateGOP to the family of Anthony Dia, a Toledo police officer who died in the line of duty on July 4.
“The senseless killing of Officer Dia is another sobering reminder of the great risk our law enforcement officers take each day to protect and serve our communities,” said Zorn, R-Ida, in his statement offering condolences on MiSenateGOP. “Cindy and I mourn the loss of this fine young man and are praying for God’s comfort and healing for his wife and children in their grief as they are left to move on without a husband and father.”
The Blade reported, on the day after Dia's death, that the officer, who is originally from Monroe County and a graduate of Bedford High School, was shot and killed near the Home Depot on Lewis Avenue and Alexis Road in the early-morning hours on Independence Day.

Dia was reportedly responding to a call about an intoxicated, combative man, 57-year-old Edward Henry, who shot and killed Dia with a handgun. Dia leaves behind his wife of eight years, Jayme Dia, and two sons, ages eight and six.
“The last thing he said over the radio was, ‘Tell my family I love them’,” Mrs. Dia told The Blade. “He lived for his family, and he loved, just loved, being a police officer.”
The shooter, whom The Blade reported had warrants out for his arrest for misdemeanor offenses, was reportedly later found dead by suicide.
