Sen. Joseph Bellino, R-Monroe, has shown his support for legislation to honor the late Monroe Township firefighter Joseph Liedel. Capt. Liedel tragically lost his life in the line of duty in August 2020 while responding to an emergency.
"This is about honoring the life and service of Capt. Liedel, who served and protected the people of Monroe Charter Township for nearly three decades," said Sen. Bellino. "After following his father in becoming a firefighter, he earned the rank of captain and the trust and respect of his fellow colleagues."
Capt. Liedel's dedication to service went beyond his local community. Following the devastating 9/11 attacks, he joined his fellow Monroe Township firefighters in assisting at ground zero in New York City. His selflessness and commitment to helping others will never be forgotten.
In recognition of Capt. Liedel's sacrifice, House Bill 4845 has been proposed to designate a portion of Highway M-125, also known as South Dixie Highway, in Monroe County as the "Captain Joseph M. Liedel Memorial Highway." The designated section would span from East Dunbar Road to East Albain Road.
If the bill is signed into law, it will have no financial impact on the state or local government. State law mandates that sufficient private contributions cover the cost of erecting and maintaining markers indicating the name of a memorial highway.
This tribute serves as a reminder of the bravery and dedication exhibited by Capt. Liedel and all firefighters who put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe. As Sen. Bellino expressed, "He continues to be missed, but with this tribute, he will never be forgotten."
