Monroe Police Department issued the following announcement on Jan 20.
Today we look back at one of our retirees, Gary Werner who retired from the MPD in 2011 as a Lieutenant with over 26 years of service.
Lt. Werner's brother worked at the MPD for a few years which prompted Lt. Werner's initial interest in the career field. Lt. Werner also saw being a police officer as a way of being able to help the community that he was born and raised in. Lt. Werner started as a Police Explorer when he was 15 years old and then became a reserve police officer after he turned 18. Lt. Werner was officially hired as an Officer in 1985 and was sent to the Macomb Police Academy for training.
During his career, Lt. Werner worked as a School Liason Officer and was the department's first K9 Officer. Lt. Werner's dog was named "Shadow" and was trained in narcotics detection. As a Sergeant, Lt. Werner oversaw the training and grant programs at the department before he was promoted to Lieutenant. As a Lieutenant, Lt. Werner supervised Road Patrol as well as the Accident Investigation Team and Firearms program.
Lt. Werner identified the biggest highlights of his career as the lives he positively impacted. Lt. Werner recalled one instance in which he found a citizen drunk and passed out in an alleyway and was able to get this citizen the help that he needed and wanted. Lt. Werner received a letter years later from this citizen who credited his later success in life to Lt. Werner's assistance that night.
Nowadays Lt. Werner enjoys time with his grandchildren and in the outdoors of Northern Wisconsin with his wife Vicki of 37 years. Lt. Werner has two children, one a Michigan State Trooper and one a Wisconsin Conservation Officer that carry on the law enforcement tradition to this day.
Please join us in thanking Lt. Werner for his many years of service and dedication to the citizens of Monroe.
