Expected Wind Storm

Storm

City of Monroe recently issued the following announcement.

With the expected Wind Storm tomorrow here in Monroe...please follow these safety tips if you encounter a downed power line ...

Electrical Emergency Tips

In the case of downed power lines, please stay at least 20 feet from all power lines and anything they are in contact with and consider them live and extremely dangerous.  Treat all downed power lines as if it were energized.  Also, heed the warning of yellow caution tape, which indicates there is a downed power line in the area.  DO NOT CROSS YELLOW CAUTION TAPE.  Call DTE immediately in all cases of downed wires at 1-800-477-4747.

Downed Power Lines

• If you see or suspect a downed power line, stay at least 20 feet away

• Keep children and pets away as well

• Never assume a wire is not dangerous, even if it is lying still

• Never cross the yellow barrier tape or barricade that may be around power lines

• Exercise extreme caution near metal fences after severe weather (Even if there are no downed power lines in sight, electric currents will be strongest where a downed wire is touching the metal fence, but even a connecting fence several yards away can be energized and dangerous)

• Call DTE immediately in all cases of downed wires at 800-477-4747

What to Do if a Power Line Is on Your Vehicle

• Call DTE immediately for help at 800-477-4747

• Stay in the vehicle and wait

• If you must get out of the vehicle because of fire or other emergency, jump clear of the vehicle.  Be sure NOT to touch your vehicle and the ground at the same time.
