WEATHER UPDATE/SCHOOL CLOSING ANNOUNCEMENT

Announcement

Bedford Public Schools issued the following announcement on Feb 1.

Dear BPS Students, Parents, and Staff

As I am sure that you are aware a large portion of the country is under a severe weather alert due to the movement of a widespread winter storm. This storm is one that district leadership has been tracking for the previous seven days. Based upon an almost unanimous collection of weather maps and forecasts, Monroe County is expected to experience a once in a decade type extreme weather experience. Most experts agree that beginning tomorrow morning, rain will transition to snow that will persist for a majority of the following 24 hours straight. In total, it is expected that Bedford and our surrounding areas will see upwards of 14 inches of snow with strong winds, potential ice, and dangerous travel conditions. While I do not typically base decisions for emergency closings on weather forecasts, the overall data and consensus by local and national meteorologists is overwhelming. The district’s goal is to always keep our students and staff safe. We also want to make decisions in a timely manner so that our families can plan accordingly.

Therefore, the following decisions have been made regarding the district’s schedule for the remainder of the week.

All Bedford Public Schools and programs will be canceled for the remainder of this week (Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday) due to the impending severe winter storm. Classes will resume as normally scheduled on Monday, February 7, 2022.

Students scheduled to participate in extra-curricular activities should check with individual coaches and sponsors for additional details. This cancellation includes district-operated latchkey programs.

The decision for closure and not utilizing a remote learning option is based upon the potential for storm-related issues such as power and internet interruptions. In addition, I am strongly advocating that any student(s) that are healthy enough to assist your families and neighbors with snow removal that you please do so. Also, if you happen to find a little time for relaxation and fun that is also highly recommended!

Thank you and please be safe Bedford.

Carl Shultz, Ph.D

Superintendent, Bedford Public School

**The Board of Education Meeting scheduled for February 3rd has also been canceled. The next board meeting will be held on Thursday, February 24th.
