State Representative James DeSana of Carleton has expressed support for the 287(g) program by co-sponsoring House Resolution 128. The program, which enhances collaboration between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities, has recently been adopted by the Taylor Police Department.
DeSana stated, “The Taylor police chief, who protects the largest city in my district, has endured harsh criticism for signing the Memorandum of Agreement regarding the 287(g) program.” He added that criticism comes from supporters of sanctuary city policies and those who have criticized law enforcement agencies for wanting to uphold the rule of law. DeSana emphasized that these laws were passed with the expectation that police officers would honor their oath to enforce them.
The 287(g) program is a federal initiative designed to provide training and resources to local law enforcement agencies. It enables them to identify, detain, and process certain non-citizens who are unlawfully in the country and have committed crimes.
“The Downriver and Monroe County communities that I represent have done an outstanding job of crime enforcement and crime prevention," said DeSana. "I cannot think of a reason for a community not to participate in a program that helps their local police carry out the job they have already been tasked with, which is enforcing current laws."
He further described 287(g) as "a helpful federal program" offering federally funded training and resources to local police and sheriffs. This assistance allows them to effectively arrest and detain criminal illegal aliens so they can fulfill their duties.
