State Representative Jamie Thompson attended the Licensed Nurse Pinning Ceremony at Detroit Business Institute-Downriver on June 16. Thompson, who is a 2012 graduate of the institute and a Licensed Practical Nurse, delivered a commencement speech to the graduates.

In her address, Thompson emphasized the significance of nursing. "Nursing matters. Your work will matter, and you will be rewarded by your part in healing people throughout our communities and the state," she stated. She highlighted the importance of understanding patients as individuals, acknowledging their fears, and maintaining calmness in challenging situations.

Thompson further remarked on the holistic nature of health care: "We nurses know that physical health is fundamentally connected to the health of a whole person." She spoke about how nursing impacts not just physical well-being but also enhances individuals' joy and engagement with life after illness or injury.

The ceremony celebrated aspiring nurses from various communities within Thompson's represented area. Expressing pride in their choice to pursue nursing, she noted their necessity in Michigan and beyond. "I am incredibly proud of these graduates for choosing this path and nursing as their field," she said.

Thompson serves as Vice Chair of the House Health Policy Committee and represents Michigan's 28th House District, covering parts of Wayne County and Monroe County.
