State Representative James DeSana has responded to the latest revenue projections released during the May Consensus Revenue Estimating Conference (CREC). The conference, which takes place twice a year in January and May, provides Michigan lawmakers with updated economic and revenue forecasts essential for shaping the state budget.
The CREC's May session revealed a decline in projected state revenue. This development has prompted DeSana to emphasize caution in budget planning. "With revenue projections coming in lower than expected, it’s more important than ever to budget with caution and common sense," he stated. He stressed the importance of protecting core services without placing additional burdens on working families.
DeSana criticized the Senate for proposing budgets without fully understanding the financial limits, describing such actions as "reckless spending." He insisted that budgeting should be grounded in reality rather than assumptions. "Our responsibility is to budget based on facts, not assumptions. We need to ensure that we stay within our means to protect the wallets of Michigan taxpayers," he added.
The January forecast from CREC serves as a foundation for the governor's executive budget proposal, while the May forecast assists in finalizing legislative budget decisions.
