State Representative James DeSana from Carleton has proposed a plan aimed at reducing financial burdens for specific groups in Michigan. The plan addresses property taxes for senior citizens and specified residential and agricultural property owners.
"Our elderly, middle class homeowners, and farmers are struggling the most to make ends meet in today’s economy,” DeSana stated. “The state keeps adding more taxes to solve its problems, but that only creates more hardship for hardworking residents. We need to do more to protect those working extra hard to afford the daily necessities.”
The proposal includes establishing a new Senior Citizens Principal Residence Specific Tax. This would replace the usual property tax for qualifying seniors, offering them financial relief. Additionally, the proposal includes exemptions for specific residential and agricultural properties from the 6-mill State Education Tax. This relief targets homeowners and farmers who are actively working. People with multiple properties would not qualify for multiple exemptions.
"The state needs to focus on helping all of our residents," DeSana remarked. "We can’t keep neglecting our families, farmers, and senior citizens. We need to build a better state for all Michiganders."
