State Representative Jim DeSana, a Republican from Carleton, announced his decision to withdraw support for Monroe County Community College (MCCC) due to its bathroom policy. DeSana did not attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Welch Center for Health and Public Safety at MCCC on Wednesday morning.

In a statement, DeSana expressed his disagreement with the college's policy that allows individuals to use restrooms aligning with their gender identity rather than their biological sex. He stated, "I declined an invitation to participate in a groundbreaking ceremony because I cannot condone the MCCC bathroom policy, and I don’t want to legitimize it."

DeSana aligned himself with public figures like J.K. Rowling, Megyn Kelly, Abigail Shrier, and Riley Gaines in opposing policies that permit men to compete in women's sports or use female locker rooms or bathrooms. He argued that MCCC's approach "ignores biological reality and the reasons why we keep those things separate," emphasizing concerns about women's safety.

Despite acknowledging the presence of many good people at MCCC, DeSana emphasized his protest as a message to the administration. "I’m protesting on behalf of students who are not able to stand up for themselves because they are in the middle of their degree program, and for employees who fear losing their job if they speak out," he explained.
