Senator Bellino Applauds State Grant to Help Remove Macon Creek Dam

LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Joseph Bellino on Tuesday applauded a state grant to help remove the deteriorating Macon Creek Dam in Dundee Township.

“This is a positive use of state resources to help safely remove this aging dam and prevent the risk of a catastrophe,” said Bellino, R-Monroe. “I want to thank Holcim for working with the state to earn this grant. It is another example of the type of long-term infrastructure projects we should be doing in Michigan — ones that are proactive and benefit entire communities.”

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s (EGLE) Dam Safety Unit announced $14.1 million in grant awards for 22 Michigan dams through the Dam Risk Reduction Grant Program, which was created by the Legislature in 2022.

This grant program aims to provide private owners with resources for proper management of existing dams and reduce the overall risk of dam failure in Michigan.

Holcim US Inc. was awarded $202,000 to remove the Macon Creek Dam. Direct deliverables from this project include a topographic and bathymetric survey of the dam, its impoundment, and the potential upstream drawdown impact area, which will be used as an existing conditions base map for design plans.
