LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Joseph Bellino expressed his appreciation on Friday for a state grant awarded to Jonesville to enhance the city's drinking water infrastructure by replacing lead pipes. Bellino, representing Monroe, stated, “This funding will help ensure access to safe and clean drinking water for the people of Jonesville.” He also emphasized his ongoing support for such investments, crediting the previous Republican-led Legislature for enabling these crucial initiatives to safeguard communities' water supply for the future.
The grant of $293,860 for Community Technical, Managerial, and Financial Support for Lead Line Replacement (TMF LSLR) was provided to Jonesville by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE). This funding will specifically aid in the verification and potential replacement of around 190 service lines suspected to contain lead or have unknown materials likely to include lead.
The allocation of $48 million under Public Act 166 of 2022 by the Legislature is designated for community support in lead line replacement efforts. The primary objective of this grant program is to verify lead service lines to comply with the 2018 Lead and Copper Rule changes and assist communities in utilizing funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Drinking Water State Revolving Fund for lead line replacements.
