State Rep. Will Bruck's plan to honor fallen Monroe Township Fire Capt. Joseph M. Liedel has taken a significant step forward as it heads to the governor for final approval. The legislation, House Bill 4845, aims to rename a stretch of highway in memory of Capt. Liedel, who tragically passed away while on duty.

"I am deeply grateful for the unanimous support shown by my colleagues in both the House and Senate," expressed Rep. Bruck. "Their overwhelming endorsement underscores the profound impact Captain Liedel had on our community during his 28 years of dedicated service. I am confident Gov. Whitmer will soon take the final step and sign the bill into law, ensuring that Captain Liedel’s legacy is forever enshrined in our state’s history."

Capt. Liedel's untimely passing on July 31, 2020, while responding to a call, deeply affected the Monroe Township Fire Department. Reflecting on Liedel's life, Monroe Township firefighters played an integral role in the legislative process to honor their fallen comrade.

"I am extremely grateful for the firefighters who worked with me to ensure that Captain Liedel’s memory is honored and cherished," Bruck acknowledged. "Their dedication was evident as they shared heartfelt testimonies before the House and Senate transportation committees and made the drive to Lansing to be present when each chamber voted on the bill."

Liedel, who is remembered as the only firefighter in the history of the Monroe Charter Township Fire Department to die in the line of duty, will be forever commemorated along the stretch of highway where his former fire station is located. This highway will bear the name "Captain Joseph M. Liedel Memorial Highway" as a tribute to his service and sacrifice.

The Monroe Township Fire Department has already raised the necessary funds to purchase signs that will recognize Capt. Liedel along the designated highway once the legislation is officially signed into law.
