State Rep. Will Bruck has successfully led the Michigan House of Representatives in approving a plan to honor fallen Monroe Township Fire Capt. Joseph M. Liedel. In a unanimous vote, the House approved Bruck's legislation, House Bill 4845, which aims to rename a stretch of highway in Liedel's honor. The proposed stretch of highway, located where Liedel's former fire station is situated, will be known as the "Captain Joseph M. Liedel Memorial Highway." This stretch will run along M-125, also known as South Dixie Highway, from the intersection with East Dunbar Road to the intersection with East Albain Road.

Bruck, R-Erie, expressed his belief that Capt. Liedel's 28 years of service to the community deserve a heartfelt tribute. He stated, "This stretch of highway will become a lasting memorial, symbolizing the gratitude we feel for the selflessness exhibited by Captain Liedel and all those who devote themselves to the well-being of our community, especially the full-time and volunteer firefighters in our county."

Capt. Liedel tragically collapsed on his way to his vehicle while responding to a call on July 31, 2020. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to a life-threatening brain bleed on August 24, 2020, at the age of 48. Liedel's passing marked a significant loss for the Monroe Charter Township Fire Department, as he is the only firefighter in its history to die in the line of duty.

During a speech before the vote, Rep. Bruck quoted Capt. Liedel's father, James, who spoke highly of his son's character and dedication. According to James Liedel, "Everyone knew him, and everyone loved him. When his fellow firefighters would show up on a call, their first question was always, 'Where is Joe?' then 'What do you need?' They knew they were in good hands with Joe."

To show support for the legislation, Monroe Township firefighters joined Rep. Bruck in testifying before the House Transportation, Mobility and Infrastructure Committee in September. Asst. Fire Chief Mike Broman, Retired Chief Larry Merkle, and firefighter Brian Merkle all spoke about Capt. Liedel's passion for the job, strong work ethic, and his involvement in recovery efforts in New York City after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Larry Merkle emphasized how valuable Liedel was to the department and the community, stating, "I want everyone to understand how valuable Joe was to the department and the community itself."

Firefighter Brian Merkle also expressed his support for the road naming, describing it as a fitting tribute. He said, "This is a fitting tribute to a man who gave his all for his community. It also helps us to make sure that future generations understand his sacrifice and the sacrifice of so many."

Rep. Bruck expressed his gratitude to the firefighters who joined him at the State Capitol while the House voted on the legislation. He said, "I am grateful for the firefighters who have traveled up to Lansing, helping me keep Captain Liedel's memory alive through their shared stories and cherished memories. Their presence honors his service and underscores the tight-knit camaraderie that defines the firefighting community."

The Monroe Township Fire Department has already raised the necessary funds to purchase the signs needed to recognize Capt. Liedel along the highway once the legislation is signed into law. House Bill 4845 will now move to the Senate for further consideration.
