Sen. Dale Zorn’s (R-Ida) office reported that two Monroe County railroad improvement projects will be great assets for the state, according to MiSenateGOP.

“As railroads transport more and more products and materials in Michigan and across the country, we need to ensure highway-railroad crossings remain safe,” Zorn told MiSenateGOP. “I applaud MDOT for selecting these local projects, and I thank the Monroe County Road Commission for their work in obtaining this funding for these important improvements.”

A total of 37 projects were awarded roughly $3 million to be completed. These projects were selected competitively and are recipients of the Local Grade Crossing Surface Program, announced by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).

The award of funding to the Monroe County Road Commission is for the Samaria Road and Morocco Road projects.

The Local Grade Crossing Surface Program delivered 60% of funding for the projects deemed eligible, while the railroad companies themselves had to cover the remainder of 40% of the costs.

The repair work is being carried out by the railroad company and contractors of the railroad. Local road agencies are working to coordinate the scheduling and construction work itself.

Earlier this year, Zorn’s legislation to improve safety at rail crossings was unanimously passed by the Michigan Senate.

“As our railroads improve their efficiency, they’re transporting more products and manufacturing materials in Michigan and across the country,” Zorn said in March, according to MiSenateGOP. “While increased train usage can help reduce the wear and tear on our roads, longer trains can also block road crossings for longer periods — impacting emergency response times and local business bottom lines.”

With his support and promotion of such railroad initiatives, Zorn is helping the state of Michigan enjoy improved transportation options. By reducing the need to own cars, the state can cut down on traffic and enhance overall safety for residents.
