A Pure Michigan tourism campaign will begin this winter from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) to encourage residents to travel, while Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is simultaneously advising residents not to travel during the holidays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We all know the next two months are going to be hard,” Whitmer said during a press conference, Michigan Capitol Confidential reported. “Too many people traveled for Thanksgiving, and we will see our numbers increase very likely because of it. And that’ll coincide with the next big holiday, Christmas, and too many people are considering traveling. And I’m reiterating please don’t. About four weeks after that, we will see the impact of that.”
The Michigan Legislature has authorized $15 million to be used by campaign, which is a taxpayer-funded government program.

“The restoration of Pure Michigan funding is certainly an important step towards recovery for our industry and the communities and people who depend upon it. We will do all we can to support our industry by encouraging residents across our state to continue to travel safely through winter,” said Mark Burton, MEDC's top executive, according to Michigan Capitol Confidential.
