The City of Monroe has officially dismissed a proposed marijuana ordinance, according to The Monroe News.
A special-interest group presented the ordinance to the Monroe City Council, petitioning to have the authority to oversee businesses that sell recreational marijuana. The City Council unanimously denied the ordinance during a special digital meeting earlier this month. The session had previously wrapped, but council members came back for the meeting to take a vote.
“The petition does not meet the threshold necessary for compliance with the City Charter (30% of the 7,660 votes cast in the most recent gubernatorial election or 2,298 required signatures),” wrote Clerk-Treasurer Michelle LaVoy, according to The Monroe News.
City Manager Vince Pastue also said the ordinance missed many important elements that would be needed to pass a land-use ordinance, like zoning considerations.
City Attorney Matt Budds also warned council members that the group could sue the city after its decision.
