More than 1,000 individuals were served by Monroe County Opportunity Program’s (MCOP) mobile food pantry at The Opportunity Center at ALCC (Arthur Lesow Community Center) this past weekend.

According to the Monroe News, the MCOP mobile food pantry distributed over 15,000 pounds of food across 405 households. It was sponsored by The Philbeck Foundation and organized to assist families in need during the new coronavirus pandemic.

“A special thank-you to all of our wonderful staff and volunteers who came out to help feed those in need,” Stephanie Zorn Kasprzak, executive director of MCOP and The Opportunity Center at ALCC, told the Monroe News. “MCOP is committed to making sure nobody goes hungry during this difficult time and will continue our emergency food distribution operations.”

MCOP also held mobile food pantries at St. Michael Church in Ottawa Lake and Water Tower Park in Luna Pier. Both were sponsored by Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan.

Food assistance is just one of many things offered by MCOP, according to its website. The nonprofit agency provides low-income individuals and families with services related to reducing poverty, improving the quality of life and promoting self-sufficiency.
