The Michigan House has approved a resolution introduced by state Representative Jamie Thompson to honor the state’s nursing professionals. The resolution, known as House Resolution 88, designates May 6-12 as Nurses Week in Michigan. This period is chosen to coincide with the birthday of Florence Nightingale, born on May 12, 1820, who is recognized as the founder of modern nursing.
Thompson emphasized the critical role nurses play across Michigan’s healthcare system. “From our largest cities to our most rural townships, nurses are the quiet strength of our healthcare system,” she stated. She highlighted their dedication and resilience, noting that they often carry significant emotional burdens beyond their shifts.
Despite facing challenges such as exhaustion and staffing shortages, Michigan’s nurses continue to deliver essential services. “We owe them an immense debt of gratitude not just this week, but throughout the year,” Thompson added.
As a licensed practical nurse herself, Thompson acknowledged the high rates of burnout among nurses in Michigan and their increasing departure from the profession due to difficult working conditions. She stressed the importance of state-level support for these professionals: “We must be committed at the state level to supporting and uplifting our nurses who live and work in Michigan so these lifesaving professionals have the resources and flexibility they need.”
Thompson was joined by members of the Michigan Nurses Association at the state Capitol in Lansing on May 6 when the resolution was adopted.
